Re: Portland Tuna -What I've Learnt

Im a bit confused due to i cant work out a conclusion which type of rod is better. Is a softer rod that bends from near the stripper roller better due to the fact you can apply more pressure when pumping up from the deep? Or a stiffer rod so you apply more leverage when in a harness? I took from it...

Re: Portland Tuna -What I've Learnt

Out of curiosity, did you try "cubing" for fish? I did many trips out from Bermagui in late 80's and we had a fair bit of success with this method. I've had a few trips to Bermi cubing for yellowfin, but I've only had one go at cubing off Portland (got one hit, but missed the hook up). Cubing does ...

Re: Port MacDonald

I think you were right the first time Wooly - it probably was a kelp forest. I remember my first time at Port Mac back in the late 90's and being really impressed with this massive kelp forest 'wall' that we found in 20-30 meters of water a number of kilometres offshore. The fronds extended to the s...

Re: Portland Tuna -What I've Learnt

Choosing Your Lever Great posts mate. Loving it What if you take braided line into consideration on a "soggy" rod? Cheers, Anth 18kg of drag coming of the rod tip is still 18kg regardless of whether it is braid or mono. I would imagine that the only difference would be a greater level of shock abso...

Re: Portland Tuna -What I've Learnt

Primary Considerations Here are three examples of different rod actions. The first one is a Shimano Tcurve 37kg game rod pulling against 18kg of drag, the second is one of my builds, a Calstar 6455XXH, deadlifting 18kg of weight, and the third is a ‘new generation’ Black Hole game rod connected to ...

Re: Portland Tuna -What I've Learnt

Choosing Your Lever Note: I am a hobbyist rod builder who has sold game rods to various customers in the past. However, to try and alleviate any perceived bias, I think it is important for me to state from the outset that there is absolutely no ulterior motive to the following advice I’m about to g...

Re: Wilson Gwme rods.

Ok. Maybe wait a day or two and I'll have the next part of my thread posted. It's got quite a few detailed recommendations on how I go through the game rod decision process - your question was well timed in this regard!

Re: Wilson Gwme rods.

Depends on whether you're talking about the fully rollered RLFVG range, or whether you're looking at using the parabolic jigging style venoms to use as game rods. If you're talking about the RLFVGs, then Sinsemilla is correct, they are very expensive. This is mainly because they are fitted with the ...

Re: Portland Tuna -What I've Learnt

Gaining Leverage – Physics Works Against You! A proper discussion about fishing rod action and design would be lacking without first exploring the physical principles of the lever and leverage. A famous quote by Archimedes was ‘give me a lever and a place to stand I and will move the earth’. For a ...
