Bill I am well aware they catch the jig when it is sinking, this has never been debated. From what I have seen the cala are slow. One of the reason they now use plastic jigs compared with the wood jigs is the plastic jigs sink slower thus easier for the squid to catch. Either way the above 2 cents I...

Which direction do the move quickly?
I have seen squid move very quickly hood first generally away from objects squirting water and sometimes ink but head first they move quite slow.

True but the jigging EGI style still results in a relatively fast retreave.
Cala's most of the time don't have the speed or the interest to catch it.

My 2 cents, arrow squid which is often what the japs target are very agressive, move quickly and will nail a fast moving jig. They are heaps and heaps of fun to catch. Southern Calamari Squid a much more dosile, they wont chase hard after a jig and when they are going slow you just about have to put...

Yep small boat and they were sooking about the good conditions.
Interestingly they were C&R quite a few snapper most of the fish clearly had burst swim bladders and probably had a low survival rate.

Biggest tip, fish are more active at first light during times of the month of small amounts of moon or when there is cloudy/overcast nights.
Second biggest tip, dispite all of the above the biggest influence is the weather.
