Some of the ones we ended up with.... all between 40-45cm or so. Caught on squid strips/Gamakatsu size 6 shiners.

Good work mate. How did you find the shiners? Seem to have worked like they are meant to.

The first whiting we pulled up (was an absolute stonka) spat the hook at the boat and I wasn't to happy. After that though we had a pretty steady hook up rate so I can't complain.

I still think I prefer long shanks but they aren't really suitable when I'm running the back of the boat for everyone. No time to keep the rod in the hand.

KL 1/0 seem too good not to use, wouldn't bother going back to long shanks.

Never seen a shiner, are they similar to a KL?

Everyone here believe flurocarbon is a must for whiting or a gimmick?

I believe they are similar to the KL but not as much of a "circle" hook.

As for fluorocarbon, don't think it's a must but can't see why you wouldn't use it...

Price for one, also a lot thicker and too robust per pound breaking strength. I dont know if the 'invisibility' really makes it worthwhile

Surface lures for whiting such as the sugar pen need to be fished with mono, allowing the lure to float.
Apparently flouro sinks and causes the lure to swim differently.

People actually use surface lures for whiting around ppb and wpb? I thought that was more a sand whiting type thing in the northern states

I've always used fluro when surface fishing, I don't really think it makes a difference. Especially if you're using light leaders (eg: 4-6lb). I've fished sugapens with fluoro up to 12lb with no issue. I've never heard of people catching KG's on surface though, it would so good if they were as voracious as the northern species.
