Westernport Bay Whiting

Post by Mattblack » Tue Jan 08, 2019 3:04 pm

Can anyone tell me how much effect the tides will have on Whiting fishing in Westernport Bay?
Is it better to fish deep on low tide & shallow on a high tide, is a slack tide the prime time to get them? etc etc.
Thanks in advance!

Much of my success has been in finding drop off or contours where the depth goes from 2-3 to 6-8m and fishing those drop offs as the turn runs out. The fish use these ledges as highways and when you get one the pack isn't far behind them. I used to fish shallow but have found toadies a pesk.

Tides make a difference as the fishing shuts down at the peak/bottom of the tide, we go and find squid in shallower water and as the tide turns, we go find the whiting and put out fresh/larger baits in hopes for a gummy or snapper.

I seen boats fishing in shallows through all tide changes in shallows.

I use to do good in 4mt at slack tide.

Picked up a few on the start of the tide change in 12+ mt and seem to be bigger too.

Whiting love current and murky water.

Whether it’s deep or shallow, I’ve found you need to have some movement in the water.

Bear in mind that westernport has much more current than the north end of ppb where you normally fish. You won’t be able to hold bottom using typical whiting gear if you fish when the current is howling... especially in deep water.

Cheers Gents....if you're fishing deep (& murky water), do you still look for weed and sand or do you just take trust in the sounder and look for drop offs?

making sure you are over weed areas and especially trying to find sand patches between them is much harder in the mud pond than in PPB

You want flow. They'll rarely bite around slack tide. Fish the drop-offs in 2-10m then either have an hour chasing squid, or go deep over reef and rubble for the big Whiting while you can get baits down without 6+oz of lead.
