Western Port Whiting 26th & 28th Feb.

Been awhile since hitting the Whiting, 9 weeks or so. Been focusing on beating my Gummy PB which im hoping this month is the month. Because of that, some fun was in order.

26th:
With mate Jayden on board, we launched at 7:30 and motored down the spit armed with Pippis and a bag of pilchards i use to cut into cubes for burley. Tried a couple of my usual areas in the top section but they were dead, and too many micro pinkies around.. ***** me. Continued further down and took shelter in a favourite area of mine out of the 13 knot southerly against tide. 1st drop, and we managed to bucket 8 fish. Moved a few times in the same area about 60m apart each time, picking up the odd 2 fish during the middle hours of the tide. As we finally got to the start of the last 2 hours, i made the call to exit the area and give a new area a shot that i hadn't fished before. It turned out to be an excellent idea, we smacked 23 fish in the last 90 minutes of tide, and dropped a fair few more. 31 Ting for a great feed between a few families as always! Fished from 7.5-10m

28th:
Having such a fun session a couple of days prior, i took my chances but knowing that a northerly never ends up being as bad as a southerly in the north arm of the port. I gave Josh a call and we were booked for an 8am departure down the Spit. As we are approaching the New Moon, the tides have been getting slower each day, which personally i don't like. Not for Whiting, not for most, although it does allow easy fishing in the deep. Headed down the spit and didn't waste any time at the northern end. I went straight into the sheltered water to some of my favourite marks. This time there for the very start of flow in the tide. First drop put us on a bunch of Yakkas and Slimies, honestly can't escape the bait fish in the port this season, its an incredibly great problem to have if you love gummy fishing like me. We spent 3 hours of moving around, moved about 7 times for only 8 fish. It was TOUGH. But i knew, if the Ting went well at the end of tide at this spot, that they'd go again today. We waited it out picking up a few more fish. Moved over to the new found spot x for the end of the run out, and sure enough they went off again. In total with another 30 fish. Lots of BIG Calamari chasing the Whiting up to the surface, and even grabbing them mid fight, as well as the surface. Unfortunately i had other commitments, and im sure if we stayed for the beginning of the run in tide, we would have completeted our double bag. Or fished for Gummies.
A great 2 trips with great mates having a ball, sometimes thats what its all about. Great to know ive still got the whiting touch without fishing for them for awhile
