10/3/19 KGW & Gummy Report, great quality fish.
10th of March.
Hey guys,
Executed the plan yesterday in no time at all. The plan was to smack the Whiting, pick up some bait whiles doing so and then setup for some table size gummies for the next tide.
Fishing again with my mate brady on board. As we got out through the channel markers of yaringa, i opened up navionics and we looked for some new areas that would most likely hold fish. I went straight to the entrance of the Eastern Channel near crawfish rock, and into the channel motoring down. Dropped in a new spot in time for the sunrise. I really like fishing hard edges off the banks, as well as good ground on the sounder combined. Being anchored perfectly on the edge with the left side of the boat in 7.5m and the right side in 8.5, the burley pot was deployed down 1ft off the bottom with pilchard cubes and pippi shells filled up full. It didn't take long for our first, a 38cm fish. Then my rod went, another 38cm fish. And it was still dark too. As the sun came up and the burley trail really developed the fish came through thick. Pulling in fish after fish, casting at the back of the boat, then further out and sure enough the school kept moving back and forth. We plucked 22 fish in 25 minutes, and heres the best part.. all between 37cm - 41cm, some great fish! Now with the sunrise over, we were in the middle period of the tide. Pulled up anchor and headed further down the eastern towards the cut. A massive Salmon bust up.. We worked it for about 30 mins and had our baits sorted, great fun, big salmon. With the last 2 hours of tide already upon us it was a race against time to locate fish again, knowing the best bite will be at the end of this tide. Tried two spots in the same area, nothing. 90 Minutes of tide left now. I motored back up the eastern and selected another new area on my charts that looked likely to hold fish. Anchored again right on the edge, burley down. within 10 minutes we had them again at the boat, all great fish like the first drop and they went hard too, buckling rods and swallowing shiner hooks. We finished up with 34 of the finest westernport whiting.
As the tide ended, we had about 30 minutes to relax whilst we waited for our gummy tide to start. Got some food, water in us, and then motored off to the mark. Sure enough as the tide picked up in the second hour, my rod had the vicious gummy nods and then finally buckled. Called it for a 5kg when it hit the deck and sure enough it was. Pretty good day on the port once again, and very happy to have found some quality whiting, as opposed to the smaller ones this seasons had to offer so far. cheers guys!
