Locating schools of whiting and when to burley?

Post by Island-boy » Tue Oct 08, 2019 4:50 pm

How do people located schools of whiting?

Other than going to the know areas they are caught and finding the ideal water depth and a bit of mixed sand and weed beds etc?

Is it just pot luck, anchor throw out a line and if no good in say 20 minutes move on?

And when to burley?

Do you burley as soon as you anchor or wait until you get onto one and start burleying to keep them around?

Also maybe an odd question, but can you located schools of whiting on fish finder? (only just got a new boat with fish finder)

Cheers

I just anchor and burley. If they dont come in 20mins then move a bit and repeat. Usually go to similar spots, but if I could I would just follow denis instead haha

I have many guys fish next to me and then move on after about 1/2 hr
I go to a spot throw 3 rods over in different spots, berley with mussels and a Tuna Berley block weighed down.
If I dont start to getem in say about an hour I move to another spot a lot further away.
If you just starting Ting Fushin go where the other boats are,Most guys will use berley so 10 boats in a tight spot should bring them around
Make sure you note where the berley is going and fish in that line
Good Luck

The sounder is probably more useful for finding sand patches where you can't see the bottom rather than spotting the fish themselves. I haven't seen anything on the sounder that I could definitively say was a whiting (not to say they weren't there) and they hold pretty close to the bottom so they might be hard to spot.
