I'm happy to spend up to $170 which is what bcf have the daiwa generation black on offer for till 29/03. But cheaper would be great, I'll certainly consider the Catana range. I'll be getting a rod this weekend so I'll keep browsing and hear all advice :)
mate on the generation blacks give armadale angling a ring there pretty good to work with

Unless you intend on using the rod predominately for lures off a boat I would go something longer than most are suggesting. From the genblacks the slugger would be the pick shimano also have a spec (9' 6-8kg) in some of their rod ranges that would be good too.

Shimano revolution inshore RVLI902SPH
Shimano Jewel JEW962SP
Shimano revolution coastal RVLC902SP
Shimano Maikuro MK902SSP
Shimano Catana CTA902SHORE

You're off the pier/beach and also want to cast lures. 9' rod offers best of both worlds without being to heavy to hold.

4000 sized shimano is a little bit too big and heavy for plastics style lure fishing
casting slugs, bait fishing etc is ok.
if fishing off a pier or beach areas predominantly then aim for a 8 or 9 foot rod and use 10-15lb braid
