Auravale lake water quality.

Post by ducky » Tue Nov 01, 2016 4:08 pm

Hey guys.

Went for a drive today and ended up taking the kids around auravale. Everybody knows it's full of micro reddies. I was scoping out the lily pads and the snags on the edges. It looks like an awesome place to put a shiteload of EP's or bass.

Doing some googling to see if any had been thrown in when they stocked devilbend and apl a few years ago and came across this
Fisheries Website wrote: Aura Vale Lake, Emerald

16 ha. Parkland & picnicking with all facilities. Boating not permitted. Melway Ref: 126 D 4.

An artificial lake formed at the northern end of Cardinia Reservoir to prevent local urban run-off water from reaching the main storage. Access from the Selby-Aura Road. Contains small redfin, river blackfish and short-finned eel. Several attempts have been made to establish a trout fishery but water quality has not been suitable for their survival.
Does anyone know what's wrong with the water there?

It's virtually a mini blue rock. Would be awesome to see a whole heap of snag loving natives in there.

From memory, the problem at Auravale was the mercury content found in fish from the area and the poor water quality. A similar problem exists in Sugarloaf reservoir. Hence, they won't stock it with fish if they know there is a potential for them to accumulate high levels of mercury.

Bass may survive maybe a C&R fishery would work.
