If i’m going for distance, i’ll leave a foot or more of line.

If I’m going for accuracy, then just a couple of inches and keep my casts flat.

One thing I do is skip lures in underneath undercut banks, in under logs etc; that involves quite a different casting technique. This is a great explanation of how to do it:

For me it depends on what outfit I'm using. If I'm using a baitcaster, the lure is at the rod tip. This gives me the greatest accuracy... and the further it is from the tip increases the chance of backlash/birdsnest when giving a full-blooded distance cast.

With spin gear I find the further the lure is from the tip (within reason), the longer the cast. Accuracy suffers though and the lure tends to lob, rather than shoot straight like a baitcaster. This is most important when fishing snags and structure, as you have to put your lure into the right spot within the structure to find the fish...and done from about 10-30 metres away.
