Post by hornet » Sun Jun 17, 2018 4:08 pm

Sup guy's, I'm buying a lighter 12 foot surf rod for this surf fishing season for bait fishing only .. I have already decided on the brand to simplify things.. it's going to be a 8-12kg OR 12-20kg I'm curious what are you guys using ? ~ (THX in advance for your input)

I wouldn't pick line class rating for my rod choice , better would be the casting rating and then match to what you want to use for your fishing. However if targeting Salmon, Mullet and tailor I would go the lighter route . If targeting Snapper , Mulloway and Gummies then the heavier model to handle the larger sinker and bait combinations.

I would have assumed a rod in the 8-12kg OR 12-20kg range would handle heavy sinkers for bait fishing comfortably ?
Hence the line ranges I settled on ?

Unless you're sharking or kingfishing there really isn't much need for a 12-20 in VIC. I'm going to the 'that' guy and say 10-15 which is what i do 99% of my surf fishing with, more for casting range than for line class.

I normally fish one of each.
For preference, I'd normally got the heavier, not really for the size of fish, but for the 7oz grapple sinkers I use as a rule in a lot of the spots we fish.

Mine are 6-10 or 8-12 I think, either way they hoik a 4oz breakaway just fine which has been enough to hold bottom everywhere I've fished. They've been capable of muscling in some big skates without any problems so they should be ok for big gummies and schoolies.
