Still own and use on a regular basis:-
Jarvis Walker - Shoalhaven - Solid Glass Rod, Still has Round rubber cap on butt, circa 1960's
Black Queen - Original, not updated version

Have Collection of various later Model / Make rods

What do you have, and use that is around this vintage.

I still use Penn jigmasters and don't know there age - my 500 jigmasters have early chromed brass spools these where made from 1958 ( strangely enough you can still buy them new with aluminium spools ) all the parts are still the same pattern though - cant say there are many designs that run for 60 years without major changes

I also use 501 jigmasters but need to find or make new spools for a couple of them again I don't know there age but where built between 1966 and 2004

I also use 1 500S which where built between the late 70s till the early 80s

as a reel they are almost the perfect Kayak fishing reel - no bearing to seize - no one way clutches ( a simple pawl and ratchet ) and super easy to service
My kayak PBs
Gummy shark 128 Cm - Elephant fish 85 Cm - Snapper 91 Cm - KG Whiting 49 Cm - Flathead 55 Cm - Garfish 47 Cm - Silver Trevally 40 Cm - Long Fin Pike 41.5 Cm - snook 64 Cm - Couta 71 Cm - Sth Calamari 40 Cm hood

Butterworth Coho, Jarvis Walker Bonnie Doon, Jarvis Walker The Clarence all still used occasionally. I have other JW rods, Hawkesbury, Bonnie Doon and other old brands like Alpha, they all just take up space. Old Diawa, Mitchell, Alpha, Ryobi, Shimano and Alvey reels, cheers davo
It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
But it's an even better feeling releasing them

Don't have to many old rods that I use,
But I'm like cheater, have a collection of old Penn Senators that I still use, I've updated them, some with tiburnion one piece frames, S/S insides,
incl bearing upgrades, and they are my go to reels for anything bigger than whats in the bay.
Plus it's a great way to kill an afternoon, rather than sitting on my ar@e watching T.V.
I have to stop buying now, I've already got more restored than I'll ever need,
it must be some sort of issue I have...........

Much of my fishing is done with tackle dating from the 1950s/60s era.

My spinning gear for streams:
Ross tubular steel rod and Mitchell 300 reel.

Bait fishing gear for streams:
JW Stanley cane rod and Crouch reel.

Bait fishing for cod:
JW Tamar cane rod and Crouch 77 reel.

There are a few other old rods that get occasional use but this is my go to tackle.

The major exceptions to using old gear are the rods/reels I use surface fishing for cod and my fly gear. Even though I use graphite fly rods they are matched to old Hardy Marquis reels.

I love the feel of the old gear some of which were very high quality and compare favourably with their modern counterparts. The Mitchell 300 is a great reel and the old aluminium crouch reels are just so well engineered. Even though the old split cane rods are slow action this is an advantage in some fishing situations. They are also much lighter than the fibreglass rods that replaced them but not of course as light as graphite.

Best Wishes

The slow action definitely helps do you use these for bait fishing.

"Strait" A's...even for Spelling?

On a lighter note I still have the black queens and still use them when I fish the Tambo for bream.
