Garfish fishing
Garfish fishing
Hi all,
I'd like some suggestions and recommendations when fishing for Garfish. I've heard Pipis and Silverfish work well. How about Squid? Do you need a specifically-designed rig for Garfish? I know that a pencil float is needed, or at least any float that works like a pencil float. Fortunately, there isn't a size limit for Garfish, and I've heard they're sweet and delicate, although there might be some small bones. Going to Mornington Pier tomorrow. LIghtningx told me chicken and small pieces of pilchards can work. I've additionally heard that you need to put a very small amount of bait on the hook, and you'll need sinkers (well, you practically need sinkers for everything; you're going to cast).
Cheers,
AzCoy7

Re: Garfish fishing
Catching garfish is an art form.
What you need to do is to visit the piers and watch what others are doing.
If gars are being caught, there will be large fish scales on the pier, Mornington, Frankston, Seaford and Mordi.
Pre tied rigs can be bought from Anaconda, BCF or Tackleworld.
It is not always necessary to use a pencil float any small float can serve the purpose.
Small hooks like a size 10 Kirby
Split shot, add enough if using a float so that it sits upright in the water.
Baits can be:
silver fish
small pieces of squid
maggots or gents
small pieces of pilchard
Pudding, a mixture of flour and water, every one tends to have their own recipe.
The use of burley will help.
Finely mashed potato
The most important thing about burley is that it is very fine and breaks up easily when it hits the water and small amounts
there are commercial burley available,

Re: Garfish fishing
My tip of rig is to use unweighted hooks with light line. Burley is must. The bait will drift and gar will get it.AzCoy7 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 17, 2019 2:45 pmHi all,
