Aussie salmon is very mobile they can be anywhere anytime.
I would use soft plastic with fast retrieve if I would look for them or good old halco metal.
Or go surf fishing.
I prefer to use bait, I might use prawn and block of pilchard with 1/0 and 2/0 circle hook.
Up to you then. You said you want to know how to specifically look for them. Then lure is the go, as not many other species will hit fast retrieved plastic/metal.
They are a predator species, they like to hunt and chase, so I think with lures is easier.
Bait fishing is like a potluck, you set trap and get whatever fish on the chew.
Bluebait always works for them on surf. Hook size is depends on how big they are. 1/0 or 2/0 should do.

Could you give me a tip for Australia salmom. I never target this fish, this is my first salmon I caught this one as by catch. On the day was targeting snapper with half-pilchard.
Every year I usually catch plenty around the port melbourne area. Starting next month they should be around in numbers.
Hook size
I usually catch them with sps but have had great sessions where I have bagged out using size 6 hooks with bits of chicken or whitebait.
Thank,you

I use size 6 hooks because the majority are the bay trout size ones. However when I use plastics to catch them I use a size 1/0 and have no trouble catching them with that :)

Have a search through the forum and you will find plenty of reports I have put up in the past, and you will see the size of the salmons I’m talking about.
