BILLIONS of dollars spent, yes billions, and this is the result
Utter disgrace
150 years ago they couldn't agree on what gauge of railway line, nothing has changed
If 1,000 gig is available for irrigation, you can't let people take 2,000 gig

We have a system that encourages politicians to jump in the pocket of cashed up lobby groups, what did people really expect? Certainly nothing will change for the next 3 years, the agribusinesses getting in the way of this are all big donors to the Nats.

Even now the environment minister was talking about "borrowing" water set aside for environmental flows (i.e. the water that these fish are trying to live in) to give to irrigators.

This is disgusting. I don't understand why big corps have so much power and say over natural resources. It's never about need, It's about what they want. I'm not against farming but there should be a cap. They should be able to make do with what they are given and that's that.

Incompetence and greed aren't exclusively capitalist inventions.

Bottom line is, it doesn't matter who takes the water out - that's just political bull...

When millions of litres of water are removed from an ecosystem, that system will suffer...

The choices are:

a) Leave the river alone and grow your crops elsewhere, and we all pay a bit more for our food

or...

b) Let farmers continue to drain the river, but taking the water out and let the system wildlife suffer.

There's not really a middle-ground on this one...

Mike.

Looks like we've got dead cod II: Electric Boogaloo

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-10-14/ ... o/11599962
Another mass fish kill event has been spotted in far western NSW, nine months after millions of fish were found dead on the nearby banks of the Darling River.

The NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) is yet to confirm the new kill and said in a statement it would be investigating, but the remote location would make verifying the mass kill extremely difficult.
