Awesome thread , thanks for sharing Dougie.
I don’t have the stones to fish off the stones but will live vicariously through the exploits of others.
There is always more to learn , fish to catch , places to see and friends to make.

Ditto to what smokin_reels said, this is an awesome thread Dougie.
LBG fishing gotta be one of the coolest ways to fish, would love to try it myself but unfortunately don't have the gear or skills.
Amazing pictures too, pretty jealous of the views you must get while on the rocks.

cheers

You don't need to approach LBG the way that I do.

There are plenty of options for sharks if you just want to cast off a nice flat beach in WPB or at 90 mile.

More kings get landed at Mornington Jetty or Docklands than probably off all the natural rock ledges on the VIC coast each year (at least that get reported.)

I am an adventurer first, and an angler second. If you set realistic goals you can probably get one with little to no effort on reasonable gear. The first fish I linked above was on 15kg mono and a 12 foot rod (admittedly a nitro, but that was not a deciding factor). You can probably set yourself up with a gummy / king outfit for about $300 which will get the job done on 95% of any fish you'll ever hook. The specialised gear is largely a neccessity of the rest of the my method than of the fish i'm targetting.

To me it's about the isolation and the connection to area I'm in. You don't need to fish like me in order to catch big fish from the shore.

Here's an example of how i'm rigging up for ledge kings using a squid strip bait. Gear is dependent on which ledge and conditions i'm fishing.

Anyfish Anywhere 6 and bait rod. This thing is an absolute beast to cast and packs unbelievable power through the middle third. The tip is soft enough to show bites when snapper fishing and the butt stiff enough to rip your hips into a 4-6oz cast pretty comfortably without risking breaking the thing. This doubles as my snapper / gummo / slidebaiting rod. Available at Busted Fishing off the shelf.

Penn Spinfisher V 10500. 600m of 39kg WFT strongline (prefer tasline, got a super cheap spool) topped with 200m of 24kg mono. This is the reel i use for both slide baiting and fishing in close off rocks.

Rig looks like this. Mainline > Swivel> 2.5m of 100lb black magic leader with a sliding casting float > small bean sinker > fluro tube > double snelled 7/0 Mustad suicides. The bottom hook on the snell can be replaced with either a live bait hook or a circle depending on what you're doing.

Even with 24kg mono, you should be able to cast this 40-50m, but if the ledge drops away I'm trying to keep it either within 3-4m of the edge or on the edge of wherever the whitewater is sitting.

This thread went quiet and there's a bunch of rain on so I'm bringing out the big guns.

Here is an image of probably the most difficult to get to ledge i've fished in VIC. It's 5km from the nearest carpark and involves a carefully timed low tide climb, and then this crossing to get to the actual deep bit.

If anyone can successfully PM me a Google maps pin of where I am, i'll show you where the ladder is hidden.

I'll admit that I try to think i'm not really scared of anything physical (existential is a different story), but it took me a solid 20 minutes after setting it up to set foot on it.

Nearly a 10ft gap with a 4 metre drop was there a safe way to land if you went in the drink.

nope, only 3 foot deep. Worse than any rope or free climb i've done.
