I have been informed that the Self servicing of Inflatable Life Jackets is going to be disallowed.
Currently Coast Guard and VMS personal are being trained and certified to do Life Jacket Servicing.
This will be done for a small fee. I am not sure of when this will happen or what the case is for brands that insist on manufacturers agent certification.
If you do your own , probably a good idea to go out and do it now as the next time it is due you may not be able to.

What a load of ****. If people are dumb enough to not self service their life jackets properly they deserve to get what’s coming to them.

I always service my own every year. It’s quite easy and straight forward to do! What a load of crap!

I think it will lead to less life jackets getting looked after. It is easy to do your own on a weekend over winter sitting inside in the warmth. If this goes ahead then you will have to ring someone to find out when they can be done, drive to the place , drop them off, then drive back later to pick them up. It will become one of those gotta get around to it jobs.

Depending on the cost of a service, there may well be a lot more thrown out also, when stores regularly have them on sale for $49 for a yoke style, if you get away with it for 2 years, it isn't a big cost in reality

Min $200 every 2 years is a pain in the arse. I run 4 yokes on the boat.

I paid $79 each for two self inflaters.

Admittedly one of them went off while I was driving down a hill into a thunderstorm on the way back from Greencape one day. Scared the ever living poop out of me.

I talking 1 jacket for Jo blo, not ppl that supply jackets for everyone on board. I even think some of the older blokes and/or tight arses will push the limits and buy one every 5 yrs or until they are caught or warned that the current one they have isn't in date. There's far to many "it'll be ok, it wont happen to me" ppl out there

bretts idea is great, but like duckman if you have a few on board then the expenses do add up.
Only option is to have the foam ones for passengers, but it does take up a fair bit of space, and on boats like yours and mine, space is premium!

Brett - on a boat its the skippers responsibility to make sure everyone on board has a working PFD. so its generally easier to have a few onboard.
