Launching tidal river / prom

Post by Kimtown » Thu Aug 20, 2020 12:50 pm

Never been to Tidal River or Squeaky beach, which is weird considering I’m a gippslander, but plan to fish and dive around the prom a lot more this season than boring old WP... any tips to launching at Tidal River? I’m assuming it’s a beach launch into the surf?

Tidal river has a boat ramp. It has been a few years since I have been there but it is a pretty poor ramp only suitable for tinnies jet ski etc.

There isn’t really a ramp, unless the ramp down onto the beach counts. You’d be launching from the beach, I’ve seen reasonably big trailer boats being launched there but they drive a little way into the shallows. The beach is pretty sheltered so the swell shouldn’t be an issue if it’s under 1.5m or so.

Cheers boys

You 2 always seem to know everything about anything lol. Appreciate it!

FYI it’s for the ski and a small tinny. So I’m assuming any tide would work? Or pref high because soft sand?

The sand is actually pretty firm, except near the top of the beach where it’s soft and dry. But you shouldn’t have to drive over any soft sand to get to the water. It’s a very gentle sloping beach and I don’t think it makes a huge amount of difference what tide, although on a very high tide you might find you’re able to launch in the river?

I’d recommend scoping it out beforehand without the boat regardless, just so you’re a bit familiar with the beach before you do try and launch a boat there.

I think there might be a key needed for the ramp too. I’ve never needed it because I’ve just wheeled the kayak past the gate but it might pay to call the park office to find out what the deal is.

You could always launch at Sandy Point and get some air over the bar. Or do the trip across from Walky
