SC knot vs FG knot. What do you use?

Post by Sebb » Thu Apr 06, 2023 8:39 am

Has anyone tried SC knot before? Looks easier to tie than FG.
I use FG for lines heavier than 10lb. Under 10lb I use other easier knots. Not worth doing FG for lines under 10lb in my opinion. They can slip easily because there isn't enough thickness to grip, and generally other knots are already thin enough when using thin line.
But what do you guys think/use?

You're not going to win me over with a video of a guy tying knots sitting at his kitchen table. I want to see instructional videos of guys tying these knots on a surf beach in pitch darkness, with sea spray in his face and a 20km/h crosswind and his other rod getting bites while he is tying it.

That's why I switched from the FG back to a Double Uni - I like the FG knot if I'm rigging up at home but it's too tricky to get back in the action while you are fishing.

haha I'm also in the double uni knot crew - simple to do, easy to remember and functional when you're needing to do one quick against windy or dark conditions!

Me too, I use double uni for 10lb and under.
But those micro guides in rods nowadays make it hard to use thick knots for lines over 10lb.

More often than not I use the FG knot it's easy enough to tie - I've replaced leaders while fishing on the kayak off shore in swell and wind with out any problem - thats probably the most testing conditions I've found the tie any knots -

I reckon the most testing condition is when the fish are biting hot, you got busted and need to retie asap while your mate is catching one after another :rf:

I like it a lot.

I found it much easier to tie than FG when rocking around on a boat.

I still like improved albright for very light FC leader.

I'll stick to my modified improved slim beauty. Strong enough, compact enough, simple to tie in wind in the dark and doesn't have a tendency to cut into itself like the double uni can
