Southpaw here too. Perfect for overhead reels, wind with the right hand.

The idea behind using your rod with your stronger hand is due to a few reasons,

1. You fight the fish with the rod .. so if it makes sense to use your stronger arm,
2. You are more co-ordinated with your stronger arm, so it make sense to cast with it aswell, especially if its in areas like rivers etc that accuracy is important.
3. The reel is just line management so you dont really need your strong hand to reel in the line.

However, i havent fished much game style fishing so it might be different in those situations.

Good points Rogue I think for a lot of people that started out fishing they probably viewed the reel as the most important tool when bringing the fish in, so that's why they had the reel in their right hand (if right handed). They probably didn't give that much consideration to the role the rod plays.
