This is the treble that started off attached to a 60gram Halco slice lure.

I was fishing (with my future wife) from Red Rocks and hurling the lure out with a 12ft surf-rod,
when suddenly I hear an "Ouch!" from behind me. Seems I hadn't been paying attention and had
clipped the missus's head when I cast out - oops!

The lure continued out to sea (it was a pretty awesome cast, about 70m) but when I checked Stef,
the treble that was previously attached to the lure was now firmly embedded in the back of her
head - the split-ring had been pulled open by the force of the cast!

How it didn't rip her scalp clean-off I don't know and it was bloody lucky that it didn't get her in
the mouth or eye.

A quick trip to the Cowes hospital and a tetanus injection and couple of stitches and all was good.
I was actually quite surprised I didn't get my balls busted...

Here it is...

Was it an older rod you had for sometime? If it was maybe it exploded under some pressure at a weak point somewhere in the rod that had developed over time.

It happens, it was a factory faulty rod. Shouldn't have passed QC, but the warranty claim went through without a problem. Yes the rod was only a week old, but these things do occur sometimes even on the best gear.

God damn mingle that's a good story.

I had the bail arm fall off an Okuma.

More annoyingly, Having not taken proper care of a pflueger XT supreme 40, The flogtastic four and I dropped into a massive bustup of Salmon off a ledge for maybe 3-4 hours, getting a couple of fish each time the school swam past. On about the fourth pass i hooked up and CRUCK CRUCK CRUCNKKKK as the gears slipped and I had to pull the sambo in with my hands on 20lb YGK......

Also modified the tip of my Nitro Surf messiah.....with a car door.
