Boat out riggers. Who uses them? & is it worth it?
Hi game fisher men ang women.
With not knowing much about out riggers except to put them out im after some advice please.
im looking at getting boat outriggers and just wondering if its worth it?
Looking at Henderson Outrigger Poles & Bases. 4.5m. inc rigging kit
Starting at: $629.95 from escapin tackle
Or is there better deals out there for cheaper price?
Or better brands for simular price
I tossed up the idea of cardon fiber poles at about $600 but (only real difference i can tell is weight)just for a pair of poles but dont think i can afford it for the amout of use they will get. So hard to justify it.
I was thinking of getting a bent butt shotgun out riger pole but could just put the rod up in the rocket launcher or bait board rod holder.
Or is a shotgun poll better to use? Or not worth it for my size of boat?
I will probably only game fish twice a year once for marlin at bermie and once or twice for tuna at port fairy with 3 to 4 people. So 1 rod each.
With the current set up of rod holders with 2 gunnel midway up the deck area and then the 2 off the bait board my old link to see pics (viewtopic.php?t=17774)
and so the 2 rods on the bait board dont get tangle i was going to clips to hold the lines back to each corner bollard.
See this link for what i was thinking for clip
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/162423588338
Or will it be too hard to lift the rods out of the bait board rod holders with a medium sized tuna or marlin pulling screaming line off?
Am i better off putting in 2 gunnel rod holders near the transom?
Any advice is appreciated

I've been thinking the same thing and wondered if an extension holder would suffice until I get a bigger boat? https://www.whitworths.com.au/main_item ... olutePage=

What size boat you have now?
Does it only have a plastic rod holder's if so i wouldnt trust it to hold my game outfits

My boat is almost 5 meters with metal rod holders (I'm guessing the extension holder should give me an extra couple of meters width in the spread)....I figure with a trolling strap it should be fairly safe.smile0784 wrote:What size boat you have now?

I have been looking at getting a set of outriggers as well. Mine will get used a fair bit, as I have some leave coming up and will out trying to catch a tuna or two.

If its just to put down the back to spread the rear rods could work

Yep...Stabicraft 1650 fisher. When I bought it I never thought it would go offshore...a couple of the guys on here have motivated me to go the next step....bloody expensive next step!smile0784 wrote:Is that a stabi craft?Mattblack wrote:My boat is almost 5 meters with metal rod holders (I'm guessing the extension holder should give me an extra couple of meters width in the spread)....I figure with a trolling strap it should be fairly safe.smile0784 wrote:What size boat you have now?

Yep. Do you only have the rod holders at the transom or some up near the seats also?

Got 4 at the transom, and 2 up near the seats as well (plus a rocket launcher where I was going to put the shotgun) Sounds like our setups are going to be very similar and was hoping a resident expert might chime in and give some good advice.smile0784 wrote:Yep. Perhaps NCR1 will cover this stuff in his next chapter of "Portland Tuna -What I've Learnt"
