Re: Lets talk Portable/travel Landing nets
i got one of the mojiko ones from an anaconda sale ages back. collapsible, extendable. good enough for smaller fish but it acted like it was made of hot wax trying to land an eagle ray. I'm also in the market for a net now

Re: Lets talk Portable/travel Landing nets
I got this one http://m.ebay.com.au/itm/271283453784" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Long handle but heavy and not that easy to carry. End up just toting it around with it open and extended - might as well have just got a long handled net. Even then it's not long enough for the docks.
Too be honest if you want long handle then the compromise is weight and portability.
If you want portability then a kayak or trout net is what you want.
If you do find a light, foldable, Portable long handled one let me know though

Re: Lets talk Portable/travel Landing nets
For high piers, I have contemplated a yabby net. Anyone given it a crack?
Re: Lets talk Portable/travel Landing nets
I'm a huge fan of lip grips, lightweight, fits in the back pack, can clip it to your belt loop etc.
However, I deliberately walk past spots I know I won't be able to land fish because I don't have a net to reach!
Would love a small net!

Re: Lets talk Portable/travel Landing nets
Yeah never leave home without my lip grips. As you say though some places just need a net. At times at the docks I'm 15 ft above the water level.... No easy answer other than don't fish or do the old lift and hope the leader holds :/

Re: Lets talk Portable/travel Landing nets
I've owned 3, being telescopic and with foldable hoops they will never be as strong as the normal ones.
Best one I had was one I got from Laverton market, it was a 3m telescopic with a hoop that folded in half. Served me we until an over eager helper tried to help me land a 4kg snapper. I'd given him instructions to lift the fish up hand over hand ( like pulling up a bucket on a rope) but he still levered it against a rock ( like a see saw). Result: one bent net.
Best advice - with portable nets, don't trust strangers with them. Now If someone wants to borrow my net to land a fish, I tell them I'll net it for them personally.

If possible, even if you have a net, always carry a gaff, even if its a rope gaff. I had my beaut net out on Lagoon pier one night and it looked like a pool toy when I brought a 7 gill to the pier.

Re: Lets talk Portable/travel Landing nets
Ahah man that sucks.
This will only be used for small fish since I fish light leaders and lifting to the pier is not an option.
I won't use it for big fish.
I've seen a few ones around might look into it in more detail soon.
Thanks.
