WPB Land Based Giller!

Post by STriplett1997 » Thu Aug 17, 2017 10:12 pm

New to FishingVic, this is my first post.

Last week, Monday 7/8/17, my mate and i found a nice spot along Somers Beach in hope of a Gummy. Conditions were as good as they get with the Low Tide at 4:50pm, and the rising tide beginning with the sun setting + A full moon! Using Fresh Salmon i had caught a few days earlier cut into decent sized chunks. Well it wasnt long before the mayhem started..

About 90 minutes/2 hours into the rising tide and i was hooked up! My reel was absolutely screaming and my heart was pumping. I was running down the rocks to the left, then the bugger switched and took me more than 100m to the right, ending up on the beach.. the cheeky bugger was running me parallel to rocks and reef, couldn't believe how smart it was. after a 20 minute fight, i finally had it tired out but this is the worst part.. my ezyrig/sinker was caught up the top of my rod, tangled in my braid along with a nice patch of weed... i was screaming for my mate to come down and help me, he did.. but it was too late, and i was bit off. Thats when i knew it wasnt a Gummy..

We walked back up to the rocks from the beach, well it wasn't long till things got even more exciting.. my second rod and my mates rod started going off like a rocket at the same time! after another 10 minutes we had it to the surface.. it was huge! I had to jump into the water almost waist deep (NEVER DOING THIS AGAIN) and grab her by the tail.. once it was beached we looked at eachother in amazement, we'd never caught something this big, ever, in our lives! It was a big Seven Giller, 2m and my estimate is around the 50-80kg mark, fairly certain she had pups. After a few photos taken whilst waves were crashing against us and our hands were too wet to even work the camera (she slapped my mate in the face with her tail ;D) , i pulled her back around and pushed her off into the waves. Perfect release! Not bad for our first trip together huh? :D I've attached PICS!

Noice

I got bitten off by something at Shoreham a few weeks ago which I suspect was a gilla. What sort of leader were you using?

Great catch guys! I am sure this won't be the last one.

Did you upgrade reel or still using the small one for gummies?
