Sandringham - 28/07 - AM

Post by StarrangerAU » Mon Jul 30, 2018 9:09 am

Well Saturday mornings forecast looked for a good morning to get out and wet the line, the tides weren't in favor but as the NT advertisement goes... "You'll never never know, if you never never go". Now I'm, not usually a fan of the Sandringham YC wall, mainly because the parking their is $$$ , so I was pretty rapt to see an 'Out of Order' on the terminal panel when I arrived. This could be a good omen I thought....

Moving down onto the rockwall I was very pleased to see a good wealth of bird activity straight out from the yacht club, probably about 200 mtrs. A good 100+ birds divebombing the water for 30mins. Now I know you boaties probably get that all the time, but us land based folk don't get the opportunity all that often. So quickly I rig up the two big rods, both with pillies, and hoist them out as far as I can go....and set and wait.... meanwhile I also go light nearer to the rocky structures with a tiddler rod and fresh mussels... set and wait...

Without drawing out the inevitable conclusion..let just say I waited three hours, without a single bite. There are worse ways of spending a Saturday morning, but geez, a bite or two would've been nice. So all in all, a very poor result on what was a very fine looking morning.
tldr; Sandringham, 3 hours, no bites.

I have fished that rockwall many times mate. Caught some really nice pinkies and snappers in season :)
The birds diving means there was most likely a school of salmon there.
It happened to me the other day too. I started throwing lures out but they were just out of range.

My experience at Sandringham has been spotty, granted the better periods for me have also usually been in the warmer months. This Saturday morning I had to drop the missus off at her work at 7am... so was restricted to fishing local that morning. Usually I might have gone to Mornington but my luck there has been woeful in the past few months, I think that maintenance barge has scared the quality fish away.

Agreed, the bird activity was a good sign for the salmon, and despite using all my telepathic mind powers to will them in closer... mmm nada....

Gannets don't always mean Salmon either, I followed a flock diving on a big bait school a few months ago and couldn't see or catch any, tried a variety of lures trolling and casting into the melee and the only interest I got was from the birds.

I too have had more luck there during the warmer months but most of my sessions have been after dark targeting pinkies/snappers.
The only fish I have caught during the day there have been gars and salmons :)

There were dolphins around Hampton/Sandringham area on Saturday. May explain the birds?
