Newbie catch at Brighton

Post by hrgh » Wed Jan 30, 2013 7:53 pm

Pretty happy with my first haul from Port Phillip Bay, having moved down to Melbourne at the end of last year (this is also my first report).

Not monsters, all 29-30cm. All caught within 20 minutes of each other, I left them biting :-)

I was fishing the inside of the Brighton breakwall, just after the tower, between 3-4pm on Sunday. Burley worked a treat. The wind was blowing pretty hard and it was quite choppy on the outside.

btw. Recently I have found the best burley by far (for me) is going to the fish guy and asking if I can have some fish frames (or buy)
drop one head and skeleton down, after smooshing the head with a rock or similar, and it creates a trail of blood/moosh/head/flesh/skin.
I drop a head+skeleton down every 10-15 mins.
worked a treat for me today.
(15 pinkies 28-30cm).
Didn't get the 50cm benchmark, so didn't keep any :p

The first two were bbq'd whole in a fish grill, seasoned with orange and rosemary salt and stuffed with a handfull of herbs. The third was filleted and baked on top of spuds, covered with cherry tomatoes and capsicum.

I fish so that I've got something to cook.

So I have these flathead tails laying around..that need cooking..hint hint.

I just can't be bothered with small fish and bones.

Slightly off topic but where do you guys get your bait? Have been fishing at brighton a bit more lately and have been getting bait from the BP near St. Kilda Marina. Not great, often not properly frozen or has gone off already. Anywhere good locally to get pilchards, squid etc?
