31/3 Mornington - they weren't lying!

Post by yepi'mon » Sat Apr 01, 2017 3:29 pm

After seeing the numerous reports of snapper mayhem out of Mornington we decided to head out yesterday afternoon.

Started the day at 2pm chasing some squid along the weed patches. First cast on the drop, not even a jig and bang we were on. Caught about 10 squid in a 45 minute period on just about every drift. Not huge sizes but perfect for bait. Jigs were a white and orange 3.5 mojiko cheap and a daiwa nude in a dark blue pilchard type of a colour. All worked just as well as the other.

From about 3 we moved out to the 19m mark and sounded our way along but Couldn't Mark more than one fish in an area so moved out a bit deeper to 20m. Sounded up a tonne of fish over an oval sized patch so anchored up, burley out and baits in. Got 3-4 bites in the first 10 minutes but nothing stuck. Waited it out as we thought high tide at 6.30, if the bite is going to come it should be around then.

Kept quiet on the snapper side but we did pick up a nice gummy who manage to snap the tip of a rod with his slapping around. A small pinky and flatty was all the area had to offer so decided to pull up stumps at 7 and move in a bit closer.

Once we got a bit closer to the 19m mark we realised there was about 50 boats about, all barred up in the same areas. Not being a fan of fishing where the other boats are we came in a bit shallower and marked up a good tree..... Couldn't find it again so maybe the sounder was playing tricks on us... But time was short so we anchored in the spot any way and got the baits in.

Bang, fish on, screaming. Bang, fish on, screaming. Double hook up on the snapper.
81cm pulled like a freight train, 72cm gave the first timer on the rod a bloody good time! Bite went off but we hung around. Half hour later bang, rod buckled, bang, rod buckled, double hook up... 80cm snapper and a teethy looking teenage 7 giller.

All the snapper on fresh silver whiting, frozen slimy mac and frozen pilchards.

By then we were 2 hours past our curfew so it was time to head on home. Cracker of a day, they certainly weren't lying about some decent fish out there!!
