Ricketts 11/11/18

Post by samjas1316 » Sun Nov 11, 2018 2:20 pm

G'day all. Had a good session this morning with my youngest. The older has gone over to the dark side (teenage life!!!) and would rather sleep in than get up at stupid o'clock. Thank God I still have a decky.

Anyway after scoring himself a nice 71 cm last weekend he was keen to go again today.

We got to the boat ramp at around 4 and there were only 3 boats in the queue. Beauty. There were plenty of space in the car park. Got everything sorted and we went to about the same spot as last week. 16 m of Ricketts.

Tried to stay clear of other boats and had the rods out before 5. Just as the last bait hit the water up comes a longliner about 70m away. He puts his bouy out and proceeds to head north towards Black Rock. I thought this is no good but then realise if he is putting his line out here there must be snapper around so I stay put. Well it didn't take long until the familiar sight of a rod buckling over and the sound of the reel going zzzzzzzz got the adrenaline going.

We had 7 runs for 6 hookups. The bite lasted for all of an hour: 5.30 - 6.30. Total chaos with double hook ups and a crazy eagle ray which for a while I thought was going to be the mother of all snaps. Bait used was silver whiting and pilchards. 3 of the 6 were caught on a snapper snatcher straight under the boat. Fish range in size from 55 cm to 72 cm. And yes the young fella now has a new pb. Weighed the biggest at home and it went 4.1 kg cleaned. When I asked him if we should try for something else next week his reply was "nah one more trip dad, I want to beat my pb!" The pro came back at around 7.00 but I'm not sure how he went. I wasn't paying attention to busy cleaning the fish. Back at the boat ramp by 9 where we were greeted by a bit of a long queue. When I was getting the trailer a few people were getting done by parking inspectors. Some aren't gonna be happy.

Great bag of fish. Even better to share with the new generation. He'll be hooked for life now and telling all his school mates about his weekend with dad fishing.

No secret spot fishnut. I just use my el cheapo sounder to get to the right depth and sound for dots, blobs and streaks (my sounder doesn't show arches) near the bottom. After the baits go out I burley constantly and check the baits regularly. If you look on the horizon of my pic you can see boats and a tanker (or the Tassie ferry). The boats are at the Gasso mark. I spoke to someone back at the ramp who fished it and they had 4 runs for non landed. Didn't speak to anyone else who bagged. My young fella thinks he is the lucky charm. He's been out twice and scored on both times. I just have to remind him that it's not always like this.
