Where to fish at Black Rock -- land-based
Never been to Black Rock before. Not for fishing, anyway. Contemplating a visit there tomorrow evening. Unsure of where to go. The pier itself? Or would the rocks on the beach be better? In terms of what I'm after ... well, anything that's daft enough to bite onto the hook might be a good start!

I talked to the guy at black rock fishing shop and he suggested that while the pier had it's moments, at the moment he wouldn't recommend it. He suggested Brighton or Sandringham piers/ rock walls.

Hmm. I've never been to Sandringham either. Might check it out.

i fish off the pier there for bait squid or garfish. but for pinkies and snapper i fish from the car park. just park my car right at the end, set up my tripod and cast out right from the car park.

Re: Where to fish at Black Rock -- land-based
Went down there tonight. We checked out the car park and rocks ~100 metres or so left of the car park and weren't confident we could get out to where it was deep. I mean, maybe the deep part is much closer than we figured, but two guys with surf rods aimed all the way out there didn't encourage us. We only have light gear.
Ended up on the pier. Still a few swimmers/jumpers. Not encourage to discourage the many bites. The ones we managed to get in were all toadies. The ones that disappeared were probably toadies too. No one else seemed to be bringing anything in, not that a series of toadfish is worth writing home about. At about 10 or so--high tide--the action, such as it was, died. Nothing from then until 11:30. Some guys throwing handfuls of burley into the drink didn't have the impact I was hoping it would.
Had a jig and, later, a gar rig in the water just for the sake of getting some line wet too. Didn't get so much as a nibble on that front.

The bay seems to be pretty hit and miss at the moment.
Guys fish the left side of the carpark with Surf gear I think.
