Yep... not sure what the benefit is. I thought it would be fighting drag or bail arm open.

When fishing a Bemm River we used JW Port Hacking rods with 8lb line
Boat "staked" in position, running sinker, tight lines, drag full on (No give).

Bream will usually mouth the bait before seriously eating it. Have a look at their front teeth with the hard plate. When they feel any tension they will drop the bait. The slack line and running sinker means they don't feel as much and suck in the bait deeper so that you can get that hook past those front teeth and increase chances of a good hook set.

Bteam being finnicky feeders when they have the bait in the mouth and move off the line comes off the reel easy and they dont feel any pressure from the rod ,been using this method forever and works well

I normally use either a running sinker or paternoster rig....depending on what the river bottom is like... fishing for bream - bail closed but drag loosened off a bit.

Most of the time I wouldn't consider bream finnicky.

If I want to hook them in the mouth for a healthy release I use a tight line, If I use a loose line they get gut hooked, no good if you want to release them healthy.
