When is best time to fish catch kingfish in Portland

:water: I just purchased a boat and very new to the boating world, I would like to organize a trip to Portland Victoria to try get my self a king fish, anyone no best time of year and some pointers ?? Thanks so much

Ok firstly stop there!!!

If you are that new and go to Portland, it is highly possible that you may cause yourself a large degree of pain, unless you take it all very cautiously until you learn what you are doing.

It is not as simple as buying a boat and going fishing, well can be, but there is a large chance of making some huge mistakes.

Learn How to handle your boat,
Learn how to launch and retrieve,

I hope you have someone experienced with you to teach you the ropes.

Do you have your boat licence and VHF licence,

I couldn't have said it any better wooly.

Make sure you know how to handle your boat properly before attempting anything of this sort.
Besides you need more than one person to do this properly. And all responsibility lies on the skipper aka you.
Portland and the rip cab be dangerous places for a newbie and you will put lyourself abs others who are trolling around you in danger

I would recommend starting in ppb. And learn how to launch and retrieve first. Then go out and do some fishing. You don't want to hold the ramp up when its busy like now. It can get very nasty very quickly with ramp rage.

I'd your local to Frankston i can show you a few things on tetrieve and launching.

Let me tell you about Portland, I went out to about the 40 metre line and when it was time to return, I had a 2 metre swell running northerly with a northeaster wind at about 40 km/hr which created waves travelling in a southerly direction, these waves were also breaking (white water), It was a slow trip back to the harbour.

I waited in the harbour until I thought the wind had died down a bit, as I left the harbour, I copped a wave over the boat, so it time to turn around and pull the boat out of the water and go home or to the pub.

I went Portland on Monday chasing tuna and kingfish.
Returned to Melbourne with no fish.

Tuna and kingfish may be in Portland, but none of the boats pulling in at the ramp with us had caught any.

On Tuesday I went to Port Phillip heads and caught a kingie then two gummies on the way back. There you go, kingies are here not there lol
