Moonee Ponds Creek
decided to give the Moonee Ponds creek and Docklands at Ron Barassi Snr park crack this morning. Somewhere different and I hoped worth a try.
Water flowing towards Docklands proved to strong a flow for the gear I had so headed along the creek instead.
Plenty of solid bites, but only managed to hook up to two smaller model bream.
Will be giving the area some further trips in the future.

Re: Moonee Ponds Creek
Good fishy looking area for bream too.. I'd check under the rocks to see if there's any small rock crabs too, great bream bait as well.
I used to collect & use them when bream fishing in the Port River in Sth Aust.. I kept some bream in an aquarium once and watched how they fed on worms and small crabs.. with the worms they used to suck them in and blow them out around three times before they finally swallowed them, with the little rock crabs they picked the legs and claws off before taking the crab body.. That's why you'll often see the line run out then drop a few times before it runs and tightens once the fish has taken the bait in the mouth.. My bream fishing was mainly done late evening and into the night..
They may also attract the larger fish..
cheers

Re: Moonee Ponds Creek
Good idea on the crabs, and i did try flicking my cranka crabs for a bit.......but like every other time, if I have the choice between bait and lures......baits win.
So cranka crabs got 20 or so casts and it was back to bait

Re: Moonee Ponds Creek
I'm pretty sure that would be classed as the intertidal zone - therefore no bait can be taken from the under the rocks. You should probably check if it's applicable in the estuaries.meppstas wrote:Good fishy looking area for bream too.. Re: Moonee Ponds Creek
Good point - but if you do find crabs under some rocks - it helps you to decide which cranka crab to go with....provide you have a few colours in the tackle boxgreggo wrote:I'm pretty sure that would be classed as the intertidal zone - therefore no bait can be taken from the under the rocks. Re: Moonee Ponds Creek
What about maggots? I used to use that in the exact same spot and it did ok. Hooked about a dozen or so undersized bream but did manage a couple 30cm+, great fight on 4lb line. Best fished on a moving tide most favourable is the high
