Oddball/Lucky catch

4am Saturday 13th I Braved the ominous lightning visible in the distant darkness and made my way to Altona.
Wind forecast looked ok and the rain radar looked as if all the rain was swinging south of the bay.
So launched in the dark and stayed in Altona bay to be safe.
Plenty of pinkies caught and released.
A few size flatties.
Couple of banjos.
1 reel screamer after high tide I thought was a gummy for about 3 seconds until the run didn’t stop. Eagle ray. After I got him halfway back to the boat it did a skipping run across the surface for about 60-70 meters. Awesome sight. Released the ray ok.
While one of many pinkies was caught I dragged up this scallop which had clamped onto my leader. Poor unlucky bugga.
Anyway I don’t know if there’s regularly scallops normally around Altona ? But it must be a sign of a good/better/healthier bay ? Caught in only 10 meters of water. I wish I could dive that far but unfortunately my ears don’t like diving any more.
Pitty I didn’t get another 20 or so scallops on my leader but that’s just ridiculous :rofl:

The water was beautiful all morning, I headed in about 1-2pm and got home and finished rinsing off the BMT just as the rain came down for an hour or so.

Good work there champ.
i love eagle rays, they are awesome fighters, and have some cool aerial displays.
and the scallop is a bonus too..

i got some pinkies and stumbled across a good salmon surface frenzy on saturday.. made my day!!!

What depth, it might be worth taking a snorkel and some fins next time and having a swim

Thanks purple, Brett it was at 9-10 meters. I’ve done diving course before with a tank of air. Successfuly passed over a 3 day course but I struggled with decompressing my ears. So I guess on one breath I will struggle
I loved the experience though.
