Hi All,

So after 20 years of land based fishing I finally decided to get a boat. So 10 weeks ago I bought a 4.95 Aluminium and have been out every opportunity since.

After initially having no luck at all (And starting to wander if I should stick to fishing off point lillias rocks), I have recently had some luck drifting between the Wedge and WS River for flatties with bait as well as soft plastic grubs.

However, after 6 weeks of battered flathead, green curry flathead, crumbed flathead etc. I would love something different.

I did catch 3 squid in 4 hours drifting same area I have been drifting for flatties at WS the other week, but tried the same again last weekend with no luck at all. Based on some posts here, squid are everywhere :S, well I cant find them .

I am going out this Saturday and I hope to find something other than flatties. Squid, Whiting or Snapper if there are any about. Anyone have any advice on where? Is there any whiting around WS, or do I have to drop off at Lara to get to point Lillias (where I have had occasional success landbased)?

I have also heard of Snapper caught down at St Kilda, anyone know if any have been found anywhere near WS.

Appreciate any advice, hope to get a good feed of anything but flathead this weekend.

Well that's all I have been catching so that makes sense. I usually find a whiting or two fishing off the rocks at point lillias. Will have to give that a go on the boat see if I can pick up a school of kgw on the sounder. Anyone else fish down there?

Whilst i'm here I have a dual battery system in the rear right hand side of the tinny and it seems to cause a very strong lean to that side both underway and drifting/anchored.

I figure its the weight of the batteries (25-30kg each).

Is this lean normal?

Sometimes feels frighteningly lopsided and also makes it difficult retrieving as it hits the trailer weighted to one side.

Any advice much appreciated.

Doesnt sound right with out something on the other side to balance it off.
I seen boats set up like that but has oil reserve on other side.
Are you able to put othe things on othe size to balance boat like eskis tackle boxes, emergency water,

Welcome to boating.
Don't try and balance it out, move it !!!
Having two batteries on one side of a tinnie is not Ideal, as your finding out.
The twin battery set up is good, but as your fairly local in your boating, probably not necessary, as long as you run with one good quality and charged up battery, I would have thought one would have been enough.
However, if your running a lot of electrical gear, two is the way.
I would definately be putting one battery on either side, not both on one side, I think even a fibre glass boat would list with 2 on one side,
I mean, that's like one person standing there all the time ( ok, a light person )
So, definately get one shifted, you can obviously feel it and there are probably safety issues there with the issues you've already stated.
Definately move one........
