Altona Pier Fishing

Post by StingKing » Thu Jul 26, 2018 10:04 am

Hello lads,

River fisherman transferring to the Victorian Sea and is after some sound advice.

I'm going down to the Altona Pier this weekend for a solid session, just looking for what gear, rigs and bait I should use.

*Is the Altona Pier a nice spot or should I be trying somewhere else close by?

Thanks!

Rigs depend on what your after and what size gear you using.
Running sinker rig or paganoster rig for bottom fish with 10 or 20lb leaders and 40lb or so if tryig for gummys.

Squit strips or pilchard strips for smaller dush upto 30cm pinkies and 1/2 pilchards for bigger or squid heads for gummys

Flatties aren’t too fussy so I’m sure you will get onto some soon

Do you only bait fish mate or like using lures/plastics as well?

I prefer bait fishing but have used plastics and lures in the Murray before!

What's the best for Flathead, in terms of rig and sinker set up? (Just squid or prawns for bait?)

Thinking of throwing the surf rod right out the back of the pier!

Flatties I have caught on just about everything lol
Paternoster rigs with a variety of different baits. Squid, prawns, pillies, chicken, pippies, blue bait, saury, mackerel caught them on everything.
