Gem pier 31/12/18

Post by critch » Tue Jan 01, 2019 9:23 pm

Went out before work to Williamstown armed with some soft plastics. I've been out fishing on a mate's boat a bit, but I haven't done much land based so I wasn't expecting much.

Arrived around 7am, and concentrated on the lower landing. Was very quiet, until I felt a little nibble right at my feet as I retrieved the lure. Dropped the line back down and hopped the lure along the bottom and hooked up a nice flathead.

I left at around 9 30 without any more action to speak of. I wasnt expecting much, so I was stoked to go home with a fish.

Went back out again on the way to work this morning. Flicked a zman grub around for about an hour with no joy, so switched to a gulp turtleback worm and almost immediately picked up a flathead, almost from at my feet!

I had a few more hits after that, however nothing hooked up. I was engaged in a war for a while with something that kept eating the tails of the SP worms, but would leave the end with the hook alone. I ended up with 3x plastics at half their length, with no hookup! The gulps seem to be dynamite with getting hits, but they don't last long. I might have to look at getting a similar shape in a different brand.

Another nice one.
I have had a similar experience in the past with pinkies biting off the ends of the plastics.

Thanks mate!
Interesting that you mention pinkies. I saw a flash of silver follow the lure right into the pier at one point, definitely wasn't a flathead or pinky though.

Might have been snook/pike then :)

Probably a snook, I caught one in Geelong on Thursday 10th and had the same thing happen later on, my plastic was swimming weirdly and when I inspected it, the paddle tail and about 1/2" extra cut like a knife.
Nice Flatties, I have fished Ferguson pier four times and Gem once and caught bugger all but a tiny goby.
