It went deep mate, never seen it at all. Three huge reel screaming lurches, then the plastic came out. It felt bloody strong and heavy.

Did it shake a lot? If it did, it's a big snapper. If more runs than shake, it's mulloway.
Sounds like mulloway to me, since mulloways do two runs in opposite directions.
Whatever it was, sounds like a big fish.
It went right so fast I could barely catch up , then left just as fast, then straight down, three rod bending lurcges taking line the whole time, then the plastic came flying right at me.....bugger.
I'm 90% positive it's a mulloway run. Try again with heavier outfit, usually when they're feeding, they're active for couple nights, especially close to new/full moon.
I would pick it as a decent snapper, the jewies I've hooked in the Yarra haven't stopped to change direction mid run. also there are a few snapper hanging around the mouth of the Yarra atm.
Interesting. All mulloways I hooked, did one fast run, stopped, and usually able to reel in to the surface (surface enough to actually saw the fish was definitely a mulloway), then did a second run into structures when I lost them.

You could be right, could be a big snapper. Big snappers run left right centre and deep.

Could be kingfish, we'll never know :-D

Personally I wouldn't use plastic for tailors, they'll just gonna bite through it. They often hit tail first, you'll get some hits and no hookups, and the tail be missing.
Use metal slug instead. Halco twisty is my favourite for salmon and tailor.

Cant tell you that, you gotta do your homework. Since it all depends on a lot of factors, like how heavy can your rod casts, how big, where to cast, match the hatch, etc. But that's me, because I like everything perfect and ideal the way it should be.

I've seen newb rock fisho in artillery rock tried casting metal lures in all wrong way possible like 14ft fibreglass rod for 20gm metal on a high rock ledge etc, on the retrieve the metal slug (with trebble) flew to his body and hooked him. Lucky he's okay.
Vice versa, dont cast 50gm metal slug using 2-4kg bream graphite rod.

I’ve also had a lot of success with the halco twistys in the 40g size for salmon and tailors!

I've had lots of success with hardbodies and metal lure with tinsels at the end - at the warmies last winter. They love shiny lures. I would replace the treble hook with long shank hook. Reduce the chance of losing the fish and easy to remove from the fish mouth.
