I went out on Monday morning with a couple of mates.

We launched in the dark at Newport at about 6:30am. The weather was calm with a rising tide, a little cold and totally overcast.. a little bit of light rain.

We first headed out around Willy and across to the cardinal marker just east of the Point Cook marine park targeting squid. We started our first drift a little after first light (around 7:15am), starting right on the marine park boundary and drifting back east past the cardinal marker. That first drift landed us 3 squid (one each). And subsequent drifts landed another 10 or 15 squid over the next hour and a half.

We then headed out to P2 to see what we might get. After a few minutes i sounded what looked like a school of fish and maybe something bigger on the bottom. I am still getting used to my new Ti2 unit so maybe it was nothing but we had no bites in about an hour so we decided to head back in closer and hit the squid again.

I pulled up right next to the no boating marker for Willy beach next to the rock wall and we were back on the squid again pretty much straight away. We kept repeating this drift with squid landed every time until about midday when we called it quits and headed back to Newport.

In the end we fell just short of bagging out, with 27 squid.

Well in mate. I was out yesterday afternoon after work, nothing could seem to go wrong which is nice once in a while. The squid were on the bite around the marine park and i managed to land 5 just on legal pinkies around the reef on plastics. Great fun! I definitely noticed the pinkies sizes are starting to get bigger. I literally threw back 5 or 6 pinkies that were 27-27.5cm. Even landed a 55cm snook on a plastic at the marine park.

Worked the patch out in front of the rock wall near Williamstown beach for Squid, 5 drifts only, but produced 4 quality squid. Would have kept going but, the guy I was fishing with didn't want to chase squid, so I relented and drifted over the sand for flathead, for almost no result :down:

I started at the rock wall and drifted south, due to the northerly. most action was towards the outer edge of the reef where the weed was, before the seabed turned to sand so I am not sure if you would get them "from" the rock wall, but give it a go, you never know. Can't wait to go back with a favorable wind that pushes me along the reef, rather than across it
