Port Melbourne fishing!

Post by fishman123 » Wed Apr 04, 2018 8:19 pm

Hi all,

New to this forum and fishing in general.

Plan to hit up port Melbourne this weekend, possibly princes pier or Webb dock.

Can you please give me recommendations for rig, hooks and bait?

Would Paternoster, size 4 and pilchards, squid and chicken breast go well?

Thanks in advance and happy fishing!!

Howdy,
Welcome to the forum and fishing as a whole! you'll get some great info here to get you onto some fish!

Port Melbourne can be quite good at times, but like a lot of spots around the city can also be very quiet at times. I much prefer fishing off princess pier as appose to webb dock, less of a walk and i tend to catch and have heard of a larger variety of species caught there. Only issue is it can get quite busy on a weekend if the weather is really nice - but you can usually find a spot. if it is packed up the end where the pylons are dont be affraid to fish in shallower around where the gates are, ive caught bigger and better fish around half way up, but having said that I will always take a spot up the end if it is available.

As for bait, I like to use fresh squid ive caught or get pillies from the market as you have a chance of a mulloway in those spots. Patternoster is my favourite or even dangling a bait unweighted straight over the side of the pier. hook size varies depending on what species and size of fish you want to catch. if you have lures, soft plastics for flatty, snapper, etc have been my best (better than bait too) and metal lures have been good for salmon.

Good luck mate!
Let us know how you go!

Thanks for the info Nooga, I haven’t started using soft plastics yet but I want to when I’ve got a bit more exp under my belt! But taken on all your advice.

lightningx, cheers mate, I’m after snapper (know I’m a bit late to the season), and flathead.

Also I plan to go around sunset/evening high tide.

Chase Pinkies, Look for SW - wind direction, go the the local piers (Lagoon, Kerferd, Station), have a chat to a few people, a paternoster or running sinker with pilchard, fish peak times - sunrise / sunset..

Welcome mate.
Enjoyable hobbie you entered into
But just remember to identify your catch and size limits

Those rigs will work for most thing fish

Have you tried circle hooks?
