Another port melb on yak, there's still some to offer

Went out on Sunday, wind was blowing less than Saturday.
A mate who just bought a kayak keen to try it out (you know who, yes you!).

In short summary, no decent/big pinkie caught like the ones caught 1-2 weeks ago, but there's still some to offer in this northern part of PPB.

Time fished : 2pm-5:30pm
Wind : north west 20-25kmh, wind gusts 30kmh.
Moon : 65%
Tide : lowest 3pm highest 9:15pm
Barometer : 1010 steady
Water temp : 13.3°C
Lure : 1/8 jig head with zman slim swimz, gulp nemesis, and various hardbodies to troll.
Gear: 1-3kg rod 200 reel 6lb braid. 2-3kg rod 2500 reel 10lb braid.

The plan was more to try his new yak than fishing, but soon we're comfortable with the situation, we were fishing!

3 of us out on water and I caught a pike on the first cast trolling hardbody. Then two small salmon around 20-25cm double hookup trolling hardbody on the right and slim swimz on the left.

Went to the pylons for an hour or so, nothing...
Trolled around the other side, nothing...
Went back to the first spot and pinkie pinkie pinkie. All undersized around 15-20cm.

Fun to catch them on a light outfit. I used 1-3kg rod and 6lb braid. Fairly easy, saw the school on the sounder, cast the plastic, let it sit on bottom for a fair bait, tap tap tap bang! Almost no need for twitching the plastic. Only enough to get their attention.

On the way back, caught another two pike, one of them took the plastic on surface and jumped out of the water a bit. Took one home for gummy bait. Anyone knows how to prep it?

Its winter, its cold, but there's still fishing to be had.

Good effort mate, looks like you guys had fun. Pikes are great bait, I caught some ripper flatties on them before. Thanks for sharing, cheers

How do you use it as bait?
Fillet? Cutlet chop on circle hook?

First time I'll be using pike for bait.
Usually I release them.

Nice report and good day out. The slayer is sick, looking forward to using it more!

Here's a flattie I got literally as I was pulling up stumps. No measure but in the 30-40cm range at a guess

When I caught the flatheads it was filleted into strips, but I'm sure a snapper won't turn down a nice cutlet of pike on a 5/0. Let me know how you go when you use it

Nice effort Seb!
I was the same the other day caught pinkie after pinkie but they were all just undersize like 26-27cm. After going through tonnes only managed to keep a few.
I agree there’s still plenty of fish out there!
Thanks for the report 😃
Cheers 👍🏻

Great report Seb and a great session with the three of you :gj:
, and I bet that mate of yours is happy to be a kayak owner :bn:

Reading the report I can just feel the comradary, fun and excitement (and me being lazy, I can feel the hard work) and it all paid off :tu:

Those Pike (Snook) are good eating FRESH, outside of that they start smelling, softened flesh and decline in taste. BUT as bait, a cutlet is perfect bait for snaps and gummies :sr:

Cheers, great to hear you guys had a great day

Bugs

happyfrigginkayaker , nice to hear that you're enjoying the Yak and having success and what better way to enjoy it than with two other blokes (one is still a mystery)

And gotta love the pulling up stumps fish, almost feels like a gimme and a bonus :tu:

Cheers, Bugs

The heads are really good for big snapper, single size 5/0 circle hook, same with a nice fillet, but it's the heads which are gold

I chopped them up to four pieces and they're in the freezer. Hopefully be okay to use as bait in spring for big snapper.
