PPB Banjos and general help needed
Hey guys,
New to the forum here and also pretty new to fishing in Port phillip bay, recently the family got a boat (Im 16) and ive been keen to get out on the bay and try my hand at some nice Snapper/Pinkies and the occasional Flatty.
Ive probably been out around 4-5 times between Feb and May and have been typically anchoring on the articial reefs just off Carrum, though I have moved around to areas like Frankston and such, also have been heading further out to try and find some deeper water because thats where I hear the off-season snapper can be.
Every single time Ive headed out ive returned empty handed Ive caught around 5-6 juvenile flatties but nothing worth keeping. However, Ive also been plagued with around 10 Banjo Sharks over the course of all my trips which ive been releasing unharmed, Theyre bloody annoying!
Just wondering if these are a common occurance for you more experienced fishos or if im just having a run of bad luck!
Also looking for any tips relating to catching some nice snapper in PPB seeing as snapper season is fast approaching :D
Cheers,
Ham

Re: PPB Banjos
Welcome to the forum:
1/ use the freshest bait possible
2/ Put in as many hours on the water as you can
3/ Get on the water before first light and also fish into last light / dark
4/ Fish reefy areas and known hot spots but take a chance every now and again and get away from the other boats and try new areas
5/ Get a GPS to store your locations
6/ Pay close attention to the barometer / moon phases / tides
7/ Always release unwanted species unharmed everything has a purpose for being in our waters.
I'm sure others here will add to my list.... Good luck.

Re: PPB Banjos
Banjo's can be a pain especially if you burley they are like vacumn cleaners, when you sound around the artificial reefs did you see any fish on the sounder if not move on. At this time of the year most snapper are caught at night with pinkies being caught during the day you are certainly in the right area. Not every fisho catches snapper every trip even when the season is in full swing.
You need to target the prime times dawn dusk change of tides etc. at this time of year I would be targeting squid and flathead drifting is a good option if you are drifting to fast invest in a drouge chute.

The sounder I've got has annoying little fish icons on it which can cover up the nice colours/curves that i assume i should be looking for when targeting snapper.
Thanks for the reply mate!
Im keen to try some squidding but dont know where to start?
Also i have no clue on how to target flatties in PBB i usually just catch them as a non-target species/off catches

:welcome: to the forum mate.
Flatties are quite easy to catch.
I usually just drift in around 4-6 metres with paternoster rigs usually does the job for me.
I cast a SP while drifting and most times catch some that way as well.
Good luck
