Spent most of the night soaking baits on the beach at Somers last night/this morning, it looked like the perfect night for it with high tide at 11pm and an offshore breeze.
Unfortunately the fish weren't playing ball and we barely got a touch all night. Just as we were packing up one of the bite detectors lit up and it looked like something was mouthing the bait. Turned out to be a little shark, the greedy bugger took a 5/0 with a big chunk of trevally.
I thought maybe it was a juvenile swell shark but the patterns on its skin look different. After a couple of attempts to swim back onto the beach we eventually got it pointed in the right direction and away it went.
When the weather warms up I'll give the soft plastics a go down there, a bloke we chatted to reckons he sees heaps of big flathead in the shallows when he fishes for gars.

Re: Somers 11-12 Sept
It's a cat shark, very common along the beaches there.
Flathead are there, I've never been able to get them on bait when specifically targeted, though I've seen some nice rock flathead pulled it at times, as by catch

Very weedy at Somers. What do you usually fish for there?
Any chance of squid?

Gummies, small snapper, anything really. It's WPB so you never know what will show up. I've never tried for squid though.junior wrote:Very weedy at Somers. What do you usually fish for there?
