Westernport Whiting

Post by Scraglor » Sat Nov 26, 2016 12:38 pm

So launched out of Mordi this morning, with a plan to get a few snapper, but with a 15knt westerly it was fairly sloppy, so we made the call to shoot over to Hastings and see if the whiting had shown up.

Turned out to be a good option, as the ramp was nearly empty, and the port was nearly dead flat. Had a good few hours fishing, ending up with 32 whiting, all but two of which between 38-44cm, with only two being below that (32cm)

Could have bagged out, but needed to be home early for a BBQ lunch.

All in all a good first trip on the ting for the season.

well done. great catch!

I was at hastings too this morning (before sunrise) until about 9AM trying for snapper only but didnt get anything at all. Water was 17deg and pretty weedy, but as I had no pippies or squid bait with me, I kept trying for snapper.

Lesson learned to bring a variety of baits.

What water depth did you catch them in?

I was going to ask if you're geared up for snapper, why not chase snapper in WP?

Would love to be able to catch KGs in WP in those numbers. Last week when trying for whiting we managed 1 leatherjacket which bit my finger (I named him Charlie) and a single grass whiting. Fortunately we got our full bag of snapper on the high tide.

I'm more confident on the whiting in WPB to be honest, I'm not very consistent over there for snapper. I typically fish Mordi/carrum for snapper, Hastings for whiting, so went to my comfort zone :P actually caught the first few in 4/0's while we re rigged for kl 1/0's. Just used squid and grabbed some pippies on the way over from Mordi.

I really need to put more hours into snapper/gummies out of WPB
