Hot landbased Calamari session.

Post by STriplett1997 » Thu Jun 07, 2018 8:10 pm

Last weekend my mate Josh and I had a very hot session on the Cala’s, fishing off Rocks not too far from the Pier.

We caught 25 Calamari, releasing 5. between 4:10 - 5:40pm. All great size for that part of the bay (Mornington) with the biggest hood 33cm.

Very aggressive and had them all to ourselves. Some people reckon Jigs matter but in my opinion they don’t so much, at least when a hot bite is on. I was using a 3.0 Natural Mackeral Sephia. Josh was using a 2.2 Black Yamashita.

Headed down to the pier to clean our catch and take a few photos
Was an absolute feast the following nights.

Mate that’s a top session! Cleaned up!
Did you save any for bait for a mulloway or you going for another separate session for that? :)

Well done mate. Think your right about jigs not mattering when they are on but when the going gets tough the right jig can make the difference between success and failure.

Nice work.
I think the jigs still matter. But generally they will take most jigs when they are suicidal.
I've had them refuse certain jigs even when in a frenzy like that

Whenever Ive fished for squid recently the last few months they have always been in a frenzy.. probably why I have that opinion hahaha.
I did have 1 session not too long ago where my Portsea Red Rui jig dominated compared to everyone else’s on board.

Cheers mate. Nah, didn’t. Caught some Pinkies that night using the heads only.

I only fish for the bigger species if I have bait caught that day tbh, otherwise just not worth it in my opinion.. from my experience this far at least

Every time I fish PPB they are always on fire.. probably why I think that way haha. Haven’t been out on WP properly in a little while now, out there I struggle more to get a hot bite, usually find the all white Sephia gets them every time though
