in my limited squidding experince i have found this is a good way to get them when in a boat, the trick is as you have mentioned to get the speed right so the jigs dont get snagged.
im hoping the trolling motor with cruise/autopilot stuff it will make it easier :P

It's like a snapper bite when you drift over a patch and have 3-4 jigs go off. Haha

I usually run one of my rods with a paternoster rig with a baited jag on top, and a 1/0 KL circle on the bottom. Sounds silly but adds a few callas to the bag of whiting. One time we got 40 whiting and 11 squid to 39cm in 1.5hrs fishing between two of us, only 2 spikes out so probably could have gotten more. Wasn't a bad morning!

I like doing this while drifting over the jig eating weeds around Shoreham. It means I can set the depth of the jig and know that it won't get snagged. If I have bait I'll have one or two silver whiting on squid spikes out under floats as I drift too. Having them under the float means I can let them drift away from the yak and cover more ground than I would with just the jigs tea bagging in the rod holders.

Soooo annoying when theres 2 blokes with 4 rods each, 4 floats out with squid spikes taking up the whole end of the pier...

If you're going to use floats make sure you keep them fairly close together and don't let them drift all over the place blocking other people from casting
