Leader length for squid?
For a long time I've been running fluorocarbon leader lengths of between 1.5 - 2.0 rod lengths when setting up my squid outfits. Is there really any point in running leaders longer than 1m?
Re: Leader length for squid?
I only use about 50-60cm for mine, great fun when the salmon come 'round too

I run roughly 1 rod length. Measured with the knot about 250mm above the bail arm. I've found this to consistently be the best middle ground between having a long enough leader without having guide wrap issues with having the leader knot on the spool.

I only fish out of my boat but my leader lengths are usually only around the .5 to 1 mt mark, sometimes I just run braid straight to a clip

Does the braid ever get damaged or worn through when its tied straight to the clip?Nude up wrote:I only fish out of my boat but my leader lengths are usually only around the .5 to 1 mt mark, sometimes I just run braid straight to a clip

Re: Leader length for squid?
i normally run 4 to 5 meters of mono leader.
i like having a bit of stretch in the line and never had a issue with tip wraps or leader knot getting caught on the line.
i find having a few meters of mono people can grab the line if needed and not worry about cutting there hands when squid is close to the boat.
my squid rod converts to my pinkie rod and like to know when the fish is getting closer to boat so i can call for a net or start to look over the side to see the size of the fish. :water:

Re: Leader length for squid?
For LANbase ,I will use enough leader 15/20lb so I cans dead lift it straight out of water onto pier...
Boat straight braid or mono or heavy ground maybe a meter 15lb

Never had any issues the clip I use nas a swivel depending on the size of the squid if I use the landing net or just dead lift.Hammy Y wrote:Does the braid ever get damaged or worn through when its tied straight to the clip?Nude up wrote:I only fish out of my boat but my leader lengths are usually only around the .5 to 1 mt mark, sometimes I just run braid straight to a clip

Re: Leader length for squid?
Thanks guys...
Theoretically speaking, will a shorter leader (i.e. 0.5 or 1m) have a negative impact on my overall success when chasing squid? Likewise, in terms of sensitivity, lure action etc, is a shorter leader length more advantages?
