Is this a baby octopus

Post by Labido » Fri Mar 23, 2018 3:24 pm

Hey guys,

Last night I was at Blairgowrie pier and caught a baby octopus??

Can someone confirm that this is an edible octopus, because this is the first time i have seen a live one, and just concerned if its not an edible one because its like a coffee colour (still alive in the pic) - see attached.

Looks edible. Haven't heard of any octopus that are poisonous to eat. Regularly get a few of these guys off Mornington pier when bait fishing but they are usually a bit more red.

Yep, its a baby octopus, I often get them off Lakes Entrance, they cling to your sinker and are very good for bait, I did tried cooking one once, I fried it in breadcrumbs like I cook calamari, it was tough as old boots.
Cheers

Now that was your mistake. To cook occies that you get offshore here.
1/3 white vinegar 2/3 water. Bring to boil in saucepan. Place your gutted occie in and simmer for at least 30 minutes. Turn off and allow to cool.
Once cool scrape the skin off and cut into small pieces and add to Greek salad.
To test while cooking stab with a fork, if it is tough cook it longer.
I eat them all the time.

There's nothing . . . absolutely nothing . . . half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats.

Southern sand octopus according to Google.
Catch these with amazing regularity at Sorrento, and, that's virtually fully grown.
