Rod Breaker - The pain of losing a pb squid!!!

Post by arabshark » Wed Nov 14, 2018 12:33 am

Fished Stony Point Pier 13/11/18 from 10pm to 11:30pm, 2 hours before low tide. On her first cast to the ocean side my wife hooked up a beast of a squid. It was ripping 12lb braid off my shimano fx2500, so I grabbed the rod off her and slowly steered the squid to the pier and as I was lifting it up it broke my rod in half, then I tried lifting it up onto the pier and it snapped my 10lb fluro.

I'm sure I'm not the first guy to have lost a squid this way. Are there any tips on how I can land these big squid better? I don't want to have to fork out big bucks for a long landing net or squid gaff. I usually use 12lb braid connected to 10lb fluro with a double uni knot.

Anyways I managed another decent squid on my other rod so not all was lost.

Maybe walk it up to land if possible and beach it?

take an old net, and make it a folding one.
Or
take an old net, take the handle off, tie string to four parts of it to make it a basket and use that.

Thats the cheapest option.
or as mentioned above walk it down to the beah, but not an easy task at stoney point.
theres was no way you would have landed that squid by lifting it up like you did.

I've seen DIY squid gaffs being used by others that don't cost that much to put together. Consists of telescopic rod (many refer to these as w** poles) that a squid jag is then fixed to the end. You can but these poles depending on length for around $50-$60 and a squid jag for $5.

I had a similar experience recently, although luckily I didn't break my rod. I resolved to buy/make something to deal with the issue, too, although I wanted it in keeping with my 'minimalist' approach to going fishing (i.e. whether I'm after fish or squid, I carry one rod + a small bag with some lures and whatnot).

I saw a guy at flinders with an old push bike wheel with the spokes removed and a net fitted with 4 ropes through the spoke holes going to 1 rope he lowered it down steered the squid into the Center then he just lifted it up
