Squid tips for a tyro

Post by Time Poor » Tue Nov 27, 2012 8:35 am

I've never caught a squid and I'd like to.

What are the three 'must have' lures?

I have a lightweight lure set-up so I believe its just the jig and action I'm missing. Any other tips gratefully received.

Steve.

Gan Craft - Egijya

or

Yamashita EGI OH Q Live Natural
(the Yamashita squid jigs are a little cheaper but just as effective!)
Size 2.5 for Melbourne down to Rosebud
Size 3 for more tidal waters past Sorrento, and Queenscliffe

If you want to start cheap sure catch and javis walker jigs work ok too and they are $3 intead of $20.

They wont last as long as the more expensive jigs but they will get you started.

IMO don't use anything less than a 3.0 just about all my jigs now are 3.5.

size 3.0 and 3.5 will sink a bit too fast in shallower water which can be a problem when fishing snaggy squid areas

Awesome, thx for the advice. I'm thinking the slower the retrieve the better?

2.5 - 3 is best in my opinion. I use a range of jigs and colors depending on the conditions.
As a general rule the red jigs have been doing well for me. My choices of color is Red, Gold, Orange and Black and of course white jigs.
I use Gancraft (New range of Australian colors) and they work well.

as far as action goes that can vary depending on the day. I tend to cast a line and wait around 2 - 3 seconds per meter of water then a couple of sharp jigs and let the lure sink again but wind some line in slowly.

The other option is go down to the pier and on a good day you will see them under the lights. Drop a jig in front of them and there is dinner.
