Squid jig haul

Hey everyone,

Last week or so I headed down to Mordialloc Pier to try squid fishing for my first time. Armed with a solitary 3.0 orange yamashita with red body I got super lucky and landed two little hoods in the first half hour, before everything went quiet.

Yesterday however I was not so lucky, losing my jig to the weeds (I suspect because my knot was too weak :dn: ).

So this morning I headed out to BCF and bought a couple more jigs as a treat and I’m just unusually happy about it so I thought I’d share it here.

All Yamashitas - in order from top to bottom:

1. 3.0 orange with red body
2. 3.0 white with glow body
3. 3.5 in an olivey looking colour with rainbow body.

Hurt the bank a bit but I’ll be testing them out soon and will let you know how it goes.

Any advice/feedback/communal drooling over the jigs would be appreciated!

Cheers

I like that olive rainbow jig. Out of the three, I'd probably put that one first.

Headed down to Mordialloc again this morning armed with my jigs - unfortunately no squid. The guy next to me suspected that my jigs were too big as he was using a 2.5 and caught two little hoods.

Oh well, you can always just enjoy the view!

there is nothing more satisfying then spending money on lures, wait actually getting a fish on the lure you bought!

Mordialloc doesn`t produce much usually, better you try Mornington next time. In regards to the colors, there is a lot of science behind however I am not really sure to which point it makes sense...

When I get time I will definitely head down to Mornington - any specific piers or places you'd recommend?

I think you've made some great choices with the colours, all round solid picks for a diverse range of conditions.

Orange body/ red foil - A red foil is a monster when it comes to overcast, low light conditions, and the orange is awesome for sunrise/set.
White/Glow body - Great colours for ultra clear conditions, full sun and then even after dark with the glow body.
Olive/Rainbow foil - You can't go past a good darker silhouette, darker jigs are great for autumn/winter.

I think size 3.0 is a great all-round size, you'll catch the bigger squid but also the smaller squid (even ones the same size as the jig). You'll find that smaller squid are often more hesitant, so giving them more time on the sink to strike helps. You can also whip the jig a few times with slack (jig moves up in the water column, but remains horizontally stable) as that fluttering is a good combo for smaller hoods. You'll often see them approach out of curiosity, and then strike on the sink.

Mornington pier but when I head down that way I prefer off the rocks at Mount martha. Have caught plenty of good size ones down there 👍🏻
